Today's Challenge: Assessing Team Health

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of meeting with a group of outstanding leaders. Many of them are attempting to build a high-performance team like the one I described in my book, The Secret of Teams. Specifically, this group was focused on building their leadership teams. One of the first questions I received was, “How can we assess our progress on the journey?”
Before I tell you how I answered the question, I want to acknowledge the wisdom inherent in the question itself. Leaders are always attempting to discern the health of their organization. The best leaders understand that organizational and team health are the key drivers of performance.
Although building a high-performance team is a journey and the signs of progress can often be hard to spot,  that doesn’t mean that your status is unknowable. As with any journey, there are mile markers along the way that can be used to measure your progress. Even if there is fog in the road, the markers still exist. The following assessment can help leaders cut through the fog and determine exactly where they are on the road to establishing a vibrant, high-performance team.
I gave these leaders the following statements and asked them to evaluate their team on a 1 – 5 scale (1 = Never; 2 = Rarely; 3 = Sometimes; 4 = Often; 5 = Always).
My team…

Manages the day-to-day operations of the business.

Is pursuing shared goals.

Uses data to monitor the performance of the business.

Identifies performance problems and their root causes.

Solves performance problems.

Is capable of having an effective meeting without my physical presence.

Has cross-functional representation from all the critical areas of the business.

Holds each other accountable.

Demonstrates genuine care and concern for the other members of the team.

Has a profound impact on the performance of the business.

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of mile markers or desired outcomes. However, you should be able to get a good idea of where your team is on the journey. For a more detailed assessment, click here – it’s FREE.
Regardless of where your team is today, take heart! No team has to stay where they are. Your team can improve. It will require leadership because no team drifts to greatness - they must be led there. Have fun on the journey![GLS_Shield]
